|Description:||Officer involved incidents are the most critical experienced by a law enforcement agency. These incidents affect not only the agency, but also the community and the officers involved. The purpose of this course is to discuss the intricacies and dynamics of the officer-involved incident, the investigation, subsequent processes, and the aftermath experienced by the agency and its personnel. Officer involved incidents in general and police shootings specifically are more than the incident; they encompass actions pre and post incident.
The investigative process, of any incident, is a multi-disciplinary procedure that encompasses the expertise of individuals, the use of specialized equipment, and the comprehension of a specific investigative protocol of rules, techniques, and methods. Investigating and evaluating the Officer Involved Incident includes the use of scientific methods, physical evidence, deductive reasoning to gain explicit knowledge of the series of events that surround the incident. No other incident can affect a law enforcement agency as much as an officer-involved critical incident.
The purpose of this two-day course is to provide investigators with an understanding of a basic investigative model for all officer-involved critical incidents, as well as the intricacies of the officer-involved incident process. This course will address and cover topics including:
History of Law Enforcement Use of Force
Upon completion, attendees will have a greater understanding of the practical and legal considerations associated with the investigation of the Officer-Involved Incident and the importance of investigative consistency.
